MiG Jets Near Reno

The following pictures were taken near Reno, NV Stead Field (4SD) in August 2000. The MiG-21 is owned and piloted by Terry Klingele and the MiG-15 UTI (trainer) is owned and piloted by Mike Broderick. Rick Vandam rode in the back of the MiG-15, providing formation instruction to Mike and overseeing the photo shoot.

Each pilot took turns taking pictures if the other airplane. The MiG-15 photos were taken using a Fuji disposable camera. The MiG-21 photos were taken using a Fuji disposable panoramic camera. Cockpit duties make filming with other than the simplest cameras risky, and the pictures usually don't come out well. The shoot was conducted at 12,000 feet and took approximately 10 minutes once at altitude. The lake seen in the background is Pyramid Lake.

The ground crew assisting Terry out of the MiG-21 are Aviation Classics Inc. employees CJ and Gary. The passenger shown in and next to the MiG-15 on the ramp is also named Mike and is an Aviation Classics avionics technician. The photos of him were taken after a flight earlier that day.

The MiG-21 is painted in Czech colors. They are the authentic paint markings, the plane has not been painted since it was imported from the Czech Republic. The MiG-15 is unpainted and has Russian markings.
