1935 Thompson Race
Cleveland, Ohio

Rolly Poth and his friends attended the1935 Thompson Air Races in Cleveland. He allowed us to scan the pictures he took and place them on the MAC website. The verbiage by each picture was taken from the captions in the photo album, and from interviews with Rolly.

"I had a friend Gretchen Riegard that worked at the Leiland hotel [in Mansfield, OH]. She had a contestant's pass to get into the air show. She was one of the first woman parachutists and was performing at the show, so was able to get us in right up to the planes.

"Cleveland airport was way out in the country back then, so we camped right there."

On the Thompson Trophy line up.

De Seversky's Amphibian on the Thompson Line up. This ship was very fast for its type but was badly outclassed in the Thompson race, was lapped by several ships. It was flown by a pilot other than the owner in the race.

Same ship with prop removed.

Ben O Howard's Mr. Mulligan on the Thompson trophy line up. Mr. Mulligan, first ship to win the Bendix and Thompson races. It was piloted in Bendix by Howard; in Thompson by Miwman.

Ben Howard's "Mike", sister ship to "Ike". The Howard Mike was fairly fast and won consistently a few years ago but the newer jobs are outclassing it now.

A neat low wing at the races. It is a smooth Rein Sportster, a newcomer in he field. It did not race.

The Tilbury Flash, smallest racing job. The Tilbury job was a ship of about a 15 ft wing and had very low power but was usually in the money when the race was over.

The Curtiss Gulfhawk. It was a beautiful ship with all metal parts such as struts, etc. They were chrome plated. The rest of the ship was orange. Al Williams was the flyer who did stunting in it.
