MiG Jets at the Reno Air Race Couse

The following pictures were taken at the Reno Air Race Course at Reno Stead Field (4SD) in June 2000. A demonstration race was held, featuring a MiG 17 piloted by Jimmy Leeward against a MiG 15 UTI (trainer) piloted by Rick Vandam. The purpose of the "race" was to explore the feasability of a jet race at Reno.

The race started at 11:00 AM and lasted approximately 15 minutes. During that time the two jets completed eight laps around the course at speeds averaging 350 to 400 knots while maintaining 40 to 150 feet off of the ground. At one point the two jets climbed up a couple of thousand feet to make way for a DC-4 returning from a brush fire mission.

The pictures were taken by a passenger while riding in the back of the MiG 15. Looking at the pictures the viewer should be aware that most "trees" in the background are actually tumbleweeds, which are 3 feet tall. The pylons seen in some pictures are 40 feet high.
